Sea freight, also known as ocean freight, is the process of transporting goods via cargo ships across international waters. It is one of the most cost-effective and efficient methods of shipping large volumes of goods, making it ideal for businesses involved in global trade.
Each sea freight method offers different benefits based on cargo type, urgency, and cost considerations. PFS Global provides tailored sea freight solutions to ensure your shipments move safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively worldwide.
FCL Shipping is when a single shipper uses an entire container (20ft or 40ft), offering more security and cost efficiency for large shipments.
Break Bulk Shipping is used for oversized or heavy cargo that cannot fit into standard containers, such as machinery or construction materials.
RoRo is designed for vehicles, trucks, and machinery that can be driven on and off a vessel.
Flat Racks and Open Top Containers are used for oversized cargo that cannot fit in a standard container, such as large equipment or pipes.
Reefers are temperature-controlled containers for perishable goods like food, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals.

Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) are a set of globally recognised rules established by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers in international trade. They specify who is responsible for sea freight shipping, insurance, customs clearance, and risk transfer at different stages of the supply chain.
Knowing your agreed incoterm at time of quoting is important as it defines who is liable for transportation, costs, and potential damages, and ensures buyers and sellers understand their duties, reducing misunderstandings.
For sea freight importers, we recommend the following incoterms, as they give the buyer more control over their shipment and cost transparency before it ships.
Ex Works (EXW) - Seller is required to make goods available for pickup at their own place of business. All other transportation costs and risks are assumed by the buyer. The full pick up address at origin will be needed (including any applicable postcodes). This can generally be found on the supplier’s quote, however, it may differ, so we recommend having your supplier re-confirm.
Free on Board (FOB) - Seller pays for transportation of the goods to the nearest port/airport of export, plus loading costs. The buyer pays the cost of sea/air freight transport, insurance, unloading, and transportation from the arrival port to the final destination.
